Summer here we come! Things are getting hot outside and in the workplace. As vaccines are being distributed and COVID numbers are going down, organizations are looking at bringing staff back to the office. Some welcome this, but many people relish the benefits of working from home (something I have enjoyed for more than a decade!). Many people like the flexibility, not wasting time in commutes, and the focus that comes with a home office. Some leaders want to force the issue so they can feel more comfortable managing people and to build better relationships within their teams. Increasingly though, and with the hot employment market, employees are refusing to go back to the office doldrums opting to quit instead. Balancing the needs of the organization and the needs of staff will be paramount. This is a place where change management professionals, like those of us in OD, will need to harness our people skills. Focusing on people and process will be necessary to bring talent back and keep them engaged. OD professionals will be on the forefront of designing compromised hybrid situations as well. It’s going to be up to us to keep things from getting too hot this summer!
